Tottenham started off the 1994-95 season with an opening day victory at Sheffield Wednesday, a 4-3 win. Spurs bought Jurgen Klinsmann at the beginning of the season for £ 2 million and it proved to be money well spent. Three successive home defeats meant the end of Ardiles reign as manager in November. Gerry Francis took over and his arrival tightened up the Spurs defence and resulted in a string of great results. They reached the FA Cup semi final however they lost it to Everton. Despite the Sheringham – Klinsmann partnership, scoring an astonishing 38 goals, Spurs finished the season off in seventh place.
Klinsmann left Spurs at the beginning of the 95-96 season for Bayern Munich. Gerry Francis purchased Chris Armstrong for a staggering £4.5 million, a replacement to Nick Barmby. Spurs made a slow start before the Sheringham – Armstrong partnership gelled. However the arrival of Ruel Fox from Newcastle helped. Everything came good for Tottenham on New Years day as they thrashed the leaders, Man United, 4-1 at White Hart lane. Tottenham finished the season off in eight position.
The 1996-97 season was a season of frustration for Spurs, where a catalogue of injuries wrecked their hopes of making an impact. Gary Mabbutt suffered a broken leg in their opening match. Chris Armstrong and Darren Anderton also suffered from injuries. A humiliating 6-1 defeat at first division club, Bolton, was when disaster really struck for Spurs. Gerry Francis was forced to buy new talent, including, John Scales, Steffen Iversen and Ramon Vega. Spurs were lucky to finish in tenth position, tallying up 46 points.
